As the wise saying goes “necessity is the mother of all inventions” drives the natives of Mountain Provinces to create what they call the “Igorot Wooden Scooter”. These handmade wooden bikes are made primarily of sturdy Pine wood or whatever available wood around. These wooden scooters run on 100% pure gravity and inertia; and can sustain speeds of up to 80 km/h downhill.
Lightweight, easy-to-assemble and maintain, the Igorot wooden scooter is made of wooden wheels covered with old rubber linings and is controlled using a foot-actuated pedal acting as brakes. The forward motion is done by riders pushing with their feet. Normally, these wooden scooters are pushed up hill and then ridden down.
During the celebration of the Imbayah Festival of Banaue, village tribesmen dressed in traditional costumes, participate in a fun-filled 4.5-mile wooden scooter race. They assembled up hill and race these wooden scooters along the highway and down to the bottom of the mountain.
