Not only political and military history – was the year that ended the terrible conflagration of the world, World War II – but also the history of medical science. The year of mass production became the first manmade antibiotic: penicillin. But today, after nearly seven decades, the golden age of antibiotics seems to be coming to an end. What I can replace? With viruses, the scientists responsible.
Magical penicillin and other antibiotics that have followed have produced a revolution in medicine: serious illness, sometimes debilitating, some previously incurable, could now be cured. For several decades after the world has been under the illusion that any infection caused by bacteria can be cured if timely intervened with appropriate antibiotic.
